Build automation tools run the commands around go build: generating code, running tests and linters, building containers and starting a development server that reloads on change. The go command itself handles compiling, testing and dependency management, so these tools mainly replace Makefiles and shell scripts with something more portable, or add live reload during development.

air is the most used live reload tool; it watches files, rebuilds and restarts your app, which is useful for web services. Task, from go-task, is a Make alternative where tasks are defined in a Taskfile.yml and run the same way on Linux, macOS and Windows. Mage lets you write build targets as Go functions in a magefile, so build logic is type-checked and needs no extra language. goyek also defines pipelines in Go, xc runs tasks defined in a README, and taskctl runs tasks concurrently. realize and gaper are older reload tools that have not been updated in years.

If your team already uses Make and it works, there is little reason to switch. Choose Task for readable YAML tasks that behave identically on Windows, or Mage if you prefer writing build logic in Go. Add air for local development of servers, and use GoReleaser, listed under Utilities, for building and publishing release binaries.
